In almost every single industry, social media is a huge slice of a business’s digital media marketing pie.  It’s an important source for driving customer referral traffic to other parts of your overall marketing, including your website, but do some social sites do a better job than others?

According to MediaBistroShareaholic looked at six months of data from more than 200,000 websites, between September 2013 to February 2014. And what they found was significant.

The study found that when it came to the most engaged referral traffic, it came from YouTube, which delivered 3 minutes 47 seconds and 2.99 visitors per user. YouTube also had the lowest bounce rate at 43.19% compared to sites like Reddit, that saw a 70.16% bounce rate.

Google+ and Linkedin finished second and third. Twitter and Facebook tied at fourth, with only two minutes of average time and two page views per referral.

Referral traffic is when a user clicks to your website from direct links on other websites, not directly or from search engines. However, there is a difference between getting good referral traffic and AMAZING referral traffic and that depends how long the user stays when they end up on your website. Are they staying long enough to learn about your business, products, and services? Are they signing up for free downloads and more information? Referral traffic can boost readership and sales, but not all referral traffic does.

It’s important for businesses to know that referral traffic can come from a various amount of sources and it’s important to not only drive that referral traffic, but to keep the customer engaged. Have a vast, interesting, and active social media presence on a wide variety of social media sites in order to catch visitors and drive them to your website.
