Social Media | 4.3.14
You may have or may not have noticed this yet, but three days ago, Google made quite a stunning updateto all Google+ page profiles. Now all personal and business pages on the social media site include the total number of views a page’s profile, posts, and photos their profile has received since October 2012 by both followers and non-followers.
Users will see this right underneath their profile pictures when they click on their profile. While Google will only let you see the total (collective) number of views that your posts, photos, and profile have received in sum, Google will only let you see how many views your photos received individually. Unfortunately, Google doesn’t allow you to see how many views your individual posts get (like Facebook Insights allows you to do) even though that number does flow into that total view count number. Your total view number may even surprise you!
It’s Google’s attempt of tapping into their own collection of extreme analytics to compete with more popular social sharing sites like Facebook and Twitter. You won’t have to rely on likes, hearts, and retweets to really get feedback for how your social media marketing is doing, at least not on Google+. Instead, you’ll see real numbers. At least, that’s what Google’s intention is for revealing the data in the first place. If you don’t want to show off your views, you can always hide by accessing your profile settings.
This update may hint at more Google+ updates and quantification in the near future as they try and match up against user data from sites like Facebook and LinkedIn. Google, we look forward to seeing a more digestible break down of data for brands and individuals to better plan Google+ activity and get this site growing!
